Bologna Airport uses one horseshoe-shaped terminal. The distances are not very long, from one end to the other the terminal is about 500 metres.

All check-in desks and the arrivals area are on the ground floor, and security and departure gates are on the first floor.

Bologna airport is one of the most crowded of all the European airports we visited. While security is well organised and long queues do not form, the transit area is very cramped with an extreme lack of seating.
Transfer between flights
Bologna is not a typical connecting airport and in the vast majority of cases you will only be able to make your own connections.
If you already have a boarding pass for a connecting flight and are travelling with hand luggage only, there is no need to leave the transit area.
From the baggage belt room, there are stairs leading directly to the departure gate area. There is no security check. However, this rule only applies when arriving from a Schengen area country.
If you are arriving in Bologna from a non-Schengen country, you must always go through passport control and come completely out of the transit area.
