Train and S-Bahn

The train is the fastest and most reliable way to get to the centre of Berlin, but the ticket costs the same as a combination of bus and underground.

Tickets for all routes cost the same 4 eur for 2 hours or 10,70 eur for 24 hours and can be bought from the red machines outside the entrance to the station's underground platform. Alternatively, tickets can be purchased on the BVG mobile app.

For travel between Berlin and the airport, buy tickets for ABC zones.

Timetables and connection searches can be done via bvg.de or also bahn.de.

Cheapest hotels in central Berlin

The station at the airport is underground under the central arrivals hall of terminals 1/2. Before entering the first basement floor there is a board with departures and track number, followed by ticket machines and on the second underground floor there are individual platforms.

Centre and main station

Central Berlin (Ostbahnhof, Alexanderplatz, Friedrichstr., HBF main station, Tiergarten, Zoo) can be reached by several lines with different journey times.

  • RE8 + RB23 (from terminals 1/2) - they only stop at selected stations and take 34 minutes to the main station. Together they run every 30 minutes.
  • S9 (from both Terminals 1/2 and 5) - stops at all stations and takes 58 minutes to the main station. The interval is 20 minutes.
  • FEX (from terminals 1/2) - Flughafen Express runs with stops at Ostkreuz and Gesundbrunnen to the main station, total journey time is 32 minutes and frequency is 30 minutes.

Lines RB24 + RB32 run only from Terminal 5, both with an interval of 60 minutes. However, they only go to Ostkreuz station, where you can change to many lines in the direction of the centre.

Südkreuz

The important station and one of the long-distance bus stations can be reached by the S-Bahn line S45.

  • S45 (from both terminals 1/2 and 5) - the journey takes 40 minutes and the train frequency is 20 minutes

Potsdam

There are also direct trains from the airport to the historic city of Potsdam, southwest of Berlin. The ticket is cheaper than to central Berlin (only needed for zones B and C) and costs 3,80 eur for 120 minutes.

  • RB22 (from terminals 1/2) - direct trains once an hour, journey time is 50 minutes

Bus line BER2 provides a direct connection between Berlin and Potsdam. It stops at all terminals and runs once an hour. The journey takes 55 minutes and the ticket costs 9,80 eur. Compared to the RB22, it is significantly more expensive and longer, but the advantage is that it also goes to Terminal 5. The timetable can be found on the website: berairportshuttle.de

City buses

The airport is also served by buses, which are suitable if you are travelling from the outskirts of Berlin. Tickets are the same as for trains, i.e. 4 eur for 2 hours and 10,70 eur for 24 hours.

In particular, use the X7 (goes to the U7 Rudow metro line) and the X71 (also goes to the U7 at Rudow and continues to the U6 terminus at Alt-Mariendorf). Both the X7 and X71 run to all terminals (T1, 2 and 5).

Night transport

The RE8 runs once an hour throughout the week throughout the night, passing through the entire centre of Berlin including Hbf, Alexanderplatz or Ostbahnhof.

There are special night bus routes to the airport from about 23:30 to 4:30:

  • N7 - south of the city centre and Spandau
  • N60 - city centre

Both routes run at a frequency of 30 minutes.

The same fares apply on the night routes as on the daytime routes.

Taxi and mobile app

The official airport taxis run strictly on a metered basis, so the price is based on the distance travelled and the time spent standing in traffic jams or at traffic lights.

Taxis are available at the airport at any time of the day or night and fares can be paid by cash or card.

The approximate cost of a taxi from the airport to the centre of Alexanderplatz is around 55 eur.

There are also mobile apps Uber or Bolt in Berlin, which offer prices to the city centre starting from 40 eur. The taxi rank via mobile apps is in the second lane / short-term parking lot about 20 metres from the terminal.
