Security checks at both terminals lead to a common transit area. Some gates allocated for non-Schengen flights (C and D) are behind passport control.
Terminal 5 is located on the north side of the airport and is the former main building of Schönefeld Airport. Terminal 5 is currently not in use.

Transfer between flights
Berlin Airport is not a major transfer hub, but some airlines may offer a transfer via Berlin.
The airport was originally built as a transfer hub and is therefore very convenient for transfer passengers.
The rules below apply to passengers who have a guaranteed transfer (both flights on one booking) or are travelling with hand luggage only.
- Schengen -> Schengen: you get off the plane straight into the transit area of the departure gates, you do not go through any further checks.
- Schengen -> Non-Schengen: you get off the plane directly into the transit area of departure gates A or B, you go through passport control to gates C or D, no security check
- Non-Schengen -> Schengen: you have to go through passport control, leave the transit area and go through security back to the departure gates
