Transfer at Bangkok Airport

The airport has only one huge terminal, so getting lost is virtually impossible. The international section is located in the left part of the terminal, while the domestic is in the right part, but they are interconnected.
- Arrivals - 1st floor
- Departures - 4th floor
The terminal is open 24 hours.
There is another satellite terminal in the middle of the airport area, but this serves only checked-in passengers and houses some departure gates.
From the main terminal, the satellite terminal can be reached by a free automatic train in about 3 minutes.
Transfer between flights
Transferring in Bangkok is relatively easy. Although the airport is very large, it only has one terminal, so you don't have to deal with the often complicated journey from one terminal to another.

International <-> International
You don't have to leave the transit zone when you connect internationally if you have flights on one ticket. You will not go through passport control, but you will go through security.
You will go through the entire airport from one end to the other in about 30 minutes, which is also a realistic transfer time from one plane to the next.
The lines at transfer security tend to be short and very well organized.
Your luggage will be transferred automatically.
International -> Domestic
If you continue on through Thailand, you must first go through immigration, but there is no need to leave the transit area completely. Follow the signs directing you to departures to Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi etc.
In the case of Bangkok, luggage will usually be transferred automatically even during this type of transfer if you have both flights purchased under one booking.
Usually this type of transfer will take 35-45 minutes depending on the length at immigration and the distance from the departure gate.
Domestic -> International
If you are continuing on to an international flight from a domestic flight within Thailand, you must exit the transit area and go through security and immigration.
Some airlines will automatically transfer your baggage in this case. Always check with your point of departure whether or not you will need to collect your baggage on transfer.
Usually this type of transfer will take 35-80 minutes depending on the length at immigration and the distance from the departure gate.
Domestic <-> Domestic
If you are transferring between two domestic flights within Thailand, you do not need to leave the transit area.
There is also no security check and your luggage will be transferred automatically.
Usually this type of transfer will take 15-20 minutes depending on the distance from the departure gate.
Transfer to Don Mueang Airport
Suvarnabhumi Airport transfer information Don Mueang DMK can be found in the Transportation section.
Is it worth visiting the city during the transfer?
There are often long layovers in Bangkok, during which it can be worthwhile to drive into the city and visit some of the sights.
In general, it is a good idea to have at least 8 hours between flights to visit Bangkok during a layover.
Attractions near the airport metro line:
- Sukhumvit - a lively modern district with bars, massage parlours and entertainment
Downtown attractions near the blue metro line (1 transfer required - total journey time approximately 60 minutes):
- Wat Pho - a temple with a famous giant statue of the reclining Buddha
- Grand Palace - Royal Palace

We fly from Munich via Bangkok to Phuket. Munich - Bangkok is with Lufthansa, connecting flight is with Thai Airways. We have booked the entire flight with a change of flights with Lufthansa. Do we have to check in our luggage again in Bangkok? Is a transfer time of 2 hours 35 minutes sufficient?
Thank you in advance! :)

See information above. Usually you do not need to re-check your luggage, it will be checked in at Munich and collected when you arrive in Phuket.
2.5 hours is certainly enough time for a quiet transfer.
Good day,
I will soon be flying from Phuket to Frankfurt with a stopover of 3h 45min in BKK. Both flights are with Thai Airways and the suitcases will be checked through. Do I have to leave the transit area after arrival in BKK or can I directly follow the signs to the international transfer? Many thanks in advance!

Hello,
You are flying Phuket - Bangkok (domestic) and Bangkok - Frankfurt (international). This means that you will go through immigration control in Bangkok, but you do not have to leave the transit area. As you write, follow the signs for international transfers and everything will go smoothly.
Hello,
We have a flight from Saigon to Frankfurt via Bangkok with thai airways (both flights). Is one hour enough to change planes?
LG

Hello,
Yes, that's enough. Your transfer is guaranteed, so even if there is a delay, you will be re-booked on another flight operated by Thai or Lufthansa free of charge.
Thank you very much for the quick reply.
Hello, I have plane tickets with different airlines and I land in Bangkok at 8.10 am and the next flight to Singapore at 10.45 am. I am travelling with hand luggage only, I wonder if the time is very tight? I guess I will have to go to immigration

Hello,
Time is enough. You don't have to go through immigration if you only have carry-on luggage. Follow the signs marked Transit.
Thank you for your prompt reply, do I have to follow the transit directions even though and initial check-in only involves arriving in Bangkok? I should mention that I bought the tickets independently for the Bologna-Rome-Bangkok flight with "Ita Airways" and the Bangkok-Singapore flight with "AirAsia".
AirAsia also offers online check-in.
Hi, we are flying to Koh Samui and connecting in Bangkok, EVA Airways have set it up straight away with a 1hr 35min layover between flights. We only have our bags on board...do we have to go to immigration or can we just go straight to the transfer...? Thank you very much.

Hi, I'm arriving in Bangkok with QA at 12:50pm and planning another flight to Chiang Mai. Is it possible to catch the 15:25hrs flight or better to take the later one at 19:10hrs? I will have a checked in baggage that I will need to pick up and re-check in. I don't want to wait too long at the airport, but at the same time I'd like to make it :-)
It's a long journey to immigration and there can be queues, the airport is huge, why stress if it's not on one ticket you probably can't make it in 2.5 hours
Look, you can't get this done unless everything really comes together perfectly. I mean, no delays on arrival, minimal line at immigration, no waiting for luggage. I wouldn't do it.

Thank you very much for the answer. So I'd rather play it safe and wait a few hours longer at the airport than stress :-)
Hi, I'm travelling from Copenhagen to Bangkok. I'm travelling from Copenhagen to Bangkok but I'm going to Hanoi in Vietnam the same day I arrive. Is it possible to avoid passport control etc. and go directly from the arrival gate to the next one? Flights are on two different tickets and thus NOT with a so-called stopover

Hey. Hey,
If you are travelling with checked baggage, you must always go through passport control, collect your bag and check it in again.
If you are travelling with hand luggage only and you have a boarding pass in advance (via online check-in) for the connecting flight to Hanoi, then there is no need to go through passport control.
Theoretically, it could be possible to talk them down if both airlines are in the same alliance.
Is it possible to go to the lounges when changing planes, or are they outside passport control? With many thanks Alexandra

All lounges at Bangkok Airport are located after passport control, so it is possible to visit them during the transfer.
Hi, I'll be arriving in BKK on 17 April around 5:30pm, if it's a good fit, then I need to transfer to Krung Thep Aphiwat station and catch the train at 8:22pm. Is this manageable? Thank you
