Auckland Airport has two terminals about 500 metres apart.

  • International Terminal - the larger building, better equipped with services, handles all international routes
  • Domestic terminal - a small terminal with only basic services handles all flights within New Zealand

Moving between terminals

A free green shuttle bus runs every 15 minutes between the two terminals. The journey time is approximately 3 minutes.

You can also conveniently move between the terminals on foot on a marked walkway (approx. 5-7 minutes walk).

Transfer between flights

Transfer procedures vary depending on the type of transfer.

Below we describe the processes for a guaranteed transfer, i.e. both flights are booked in the same reservation.

International -> Domestic

After getting off the plane you have to go through immigration control (waiting time in line usually 20-45 minutes).

You must then always collect your checked baggage, go through customs and leave the transit area.

Next, you have to move from the international to the domestic terminal - you can either use the free shuttle bus or walk about 450 metres.

  • Average transfer time - 60-90 minutes
  • Baggage on transfer - you must always pick up

Domestic -> International

After getting off the plane, go outside to the public area. You must move from the domestic to the international terminal - either by free shuttle bus or by walking about 450 meters.

At the international terminal you will go through security to the transit section.

Your luggage will usually be sent to your final destination and you don't have to worry about it.

  • Average transfer time - 40-70 minutes
  • Baggage on transfer - will be transferred automatically

International <-> International

The international terminal has a direct transit option so you don't have to leave the transit area.

Follow the "International Transfer" signage which will lead you to security and then straight to the departure gates. There is no immigration check.

  • Average transfer time -25-35 minutes
  • Baggage on transfer - will be transferred automatically

Domestic <-> Domestic

Due to Auckland's location relatively in the north of the North Island, the airport is not a very common location for domestic transfers.

Also because of this, it does not have a direct transfer transit zone option. You always have to go out to the public area and go through security to the departure gates.

However, the domestic terminal is very small and the transfer will be quick and straightforward.

  • Average transfer time - 15-20 minutes
  • Baggage on transfer - will be transferred automatically

Opening hours - overnight at the airport

The international terminal is open 24/7, while the domestic terminal building has opening hours of 4:30-23:00.

The public area of the airport does not have any comfortable seats or relaxation areas. However, the transit section is full of comfortable seats and it is possible to spend the night here, for example, during a long night transfer.
