Iceland's third largest airport is located 3.5 km south of the centre of Akureyri in the north of the island. It is an important link between this part of Iceland and the world, with air travel eliminating the need to travel 400 km overland to Reykjavik.
Akureyri Airport has one very small terminal, with no more than 30 metres from the plane to the gate.
Flights from Akureyri are mainly domestic to Reykjavík RKV and routes to smaller cities in northern Iceland.
Recently, larger transport planes have also started flying to Akureyri on international routes. If you're a passenger on one of these, be prepared for a cramped terminal: check-in queues often go all the way out the front of the building.
For example, you can buy flights to Akureyri on swiss.com.
