Promthep Cape

Phromthep Cape

Enjoy breathtaking sunsets and go hiking. Visit the southernmost point of Phuket Island, Cape Promthep (sometimes spelled Phromthep or Phrom Thep).

The 10 best hotels in Phuket

The place is surrounded by various local food stalls as well as clothing and souvenir shops.

Sunsets

Cape Promthep is the most popular spot in all of Phuket for watching the sun set.

This is because the viewpoint offers a direct view of the western horizon over the sea, with other directions framed by the very photogenic cliffs and hilly coastline.

Expect to see many tour buses heading here at sunset time, and you'll be crowded in with hundreds of other people.

Walk to the Cape

Prom Thep is a popular hiking spot, which leads from the car park steeply down to the very end of the mainland. Follow the same path back up steeply again.

However, the path is relatively safe and doable even for less trained travellers.

In total, you will walk about 900 metres there and back and climb over 120 metres.

Visit the historic lighthouse

A beautiful old lighthouse with a golden roof stands at the top of the cliff by the main viewpoint.

The lighthouse is still in operation and its beam can reach a distance of up to 39 km.

On the ground floor of the lighthouse you can visit a small exhibition about the history of its construction for free.

How to get to Cape Promthep?

The Cape lies 18 km south of Phuket Town and 21 km from the resort town of Patong.

By car

The main road leads to the lighthouse, at the end of which there is a free car park. This is often crowded, but you can park for free on the shoulders of the wide road.

By bus

There is also a Phuket Smart Bus service to the headland, but only 3 times a day in the early evening to serve those interested in watching the sunsets. The timetable can be found on the website: phuketsmartbus.com/time-table.

If you take the bus to the Cape from Rawai, we recommend waiting after the junction towards the Cape (location at google.com/maps). Not all buses to the Cape leave from the marked bus stop on the promenade. Due to frequent delays, drivers sometimes cut short their journey and skip the bus stop to the Cape. However, you can also catch the bus en route outside the bus stop.

The fare is 100 thb regardless of the distance traveled.

Taxi, Grab, Bolt

The Cape is of course also accessible by taxi, which are always waiting in large numbers near the car park.

If you'll be travelling at around sunset, expect up to 30% higher fares than normal daytime on the Grab and Bolt mobile apps.
