Extensive agriculture on the island has eradicated the vast forests. However, they have survived on the steep slopes of the monumental cliffs called Terr'Alta on the northeast coast.
The densely forested hillsides plunge into the ocean from heights of up to 350 metres and offer breathtaking views from several points.

Where to go for the best views?
Miradouro Alto dos Cedros
The best view of the cliffs is from the end of the short hiking trail "Alto dos Cedros" from the village of Ribeirinha.

Miradouro da Terr'Alta
A great viewpoint just off the main road and with parking. Personally we liked it considerably less than Alto dos Cedros though. The cliffs are not seen from the side but directly from above and therefore their monumentality does not stand out.
