The small lake, at over 800 metres above sea level, is a popular destination when travelling through the central mountains of Pico.

A tarmac road leads all the way to the lake, with a spacious car park at the end. The turn-off from the main road "Estrada Longitudinal" is clearly signposted and is only about 300 metres long.
There is also a marked hiking trail from the lake down to the sea to the town of Sao Roque do Pico.
