Tioman is a typical holiday island that attracts mainly sea activities. Enjoy sunny days on the beach, watch the underwater life or go on one of the many jungle treks along the island.
Relax on the beach
Sunbathing and uninterrupted relaxation on the sandy beaches will certainly be a welcome activity every day. These can be found all along Tioman.
The beaches here are sandy with a gradual entry into the sea.
The sea is calm on the western and southern side of the island, but on the eastern side the water is rough and you can expect waves up to a metre high. It's up to you what you prefer. The ideal is definitely a combination and to experience the island from all possible sides.
Another specific feature of Tioman is the rocky coastline, but not just any coastline. Large granite stones line the shores, especially at Genting, creating picturesque nooks and crannies that photographers in particular will appreciate.
For detailed descriptions of the resorts and individual beaches, see the Tioman beaches page.
Snorkelling
What to do by the sea when your sunbathing is getting slightly boring? Take your snorkel and fins and dive into the local waters. Along the entire coastline, you'll find lots of different fish and corals in the sea. The biggest attraction is certainly the sharks.
Small sharks often swim past you while swimming without you noticing them. They can reach a length of half a metre to a metre and are completely harmless, if not shy.
If you want to experience the best of underwater life, head to the small islands along the coast. In particular, Pulau Tumuk and Renggis Island. Pulau Tumuk can be easily reached from Paya, while Renggis Island can be reached from Berajya Tioman Resort.
If you don't have your own snorkeling equipment, rentals are available at 10 myr from any hotel or travel or dive agency.
Diving
Tioman is an island promised to divers. They come here from all over the world and across the island you will find several dive agencies providing equipment, training and tours.
Many of the hotels are purely for divers.
Boat trips
If you want to experience as much of Tioman as possible, ask local travel agencies about boat trips. Snorkelling at the most famous spots such as Pulau Rengis, Marina Park or Monkey Bay is part of the main focus of such a trip.
The trips range in time from 3 hours to a full day trip around the island and are offered in every resort. An example of a trip from Paya:
- A = Coral Island, Paris Panjang, Malang Rock, Teluk Genting, Tekek and Regis Island
- B = Renggis Island, Marine Park and Tekek
- C = Renggis Island, Marine Park, Salang and Shark Point
- D = Waterfalls and Batu Semebal
- E = Around the island (Batu Semebal, Waterfalls, Juara, Shark Point and Renggis Island)
All excursions include snorkeling equipment such as snorkeling goggles, snorkel, life jacket and fins.
Prices range from 60 myr to 100 myr.
A minimum number of travellers is often a prerequisite for a trip to take place, but for the cheaper basic trips this is usually not a problem.
Each agency has its own range of trips, so don't hesitate to ask or check out the offers from all agencies and hotels.
A full day boat rental with a trip around the island costs 800 myr, but shorter and cheaper private trips can also be arranged.
Kayaking
How to easily explore the surrounding bays without overcoming jungle obstacles? By sea. Rent a kayak and enjoy the adventure.
Kayak offers larger hotels and resorts on the east side of the island, where the sea is calm all day. Hire for an hour including life jackets costs about 50 myr.
Jungle Trek
Whatever secluded resort you find on Tioman, it's almost always connected to the others by land. The trails across the resorts can be circuitous, but easily navigable for the normally active person. A sweaty T-shirt is definitely worth the experience.
Very good map documentation can be found on the Czech portal Mapy.cz, where you can see individual hiking trails and elevation changes.
Take good footwear, repellent and plenty of drinking water. Depending on the distance, the trip will take between 20 and 60 minutes.
