Nishi Honganji

Nishi Hongan-ji

Nishi Hongan-ji, sometimes also written as Nishi Hongwanji, is the main temple of the Jōdo Shinshū Buddhist sect in Kyoto.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is located right in the centre of the city about a 15-minute walk from the tallest wooden pagoda in Japan, belonging to Toji Temple.

Nishi Honganji Temple was founded in 1591 by feudal lord and samurai Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who had his residence in nearby Nijo Castle. Some of the buildings or entrance gates of Nishi Honganji Temple closely resemble the architecture of Nijo Castle.

The grounds are square in shape, with 3 main halls:

  • Karamon
  • Goeido
  • Amidado

Admission and opening hours

Entrance is possible to the temple grounds and all the main buildings every day between 6:00-17:00.

Admission is completely free.

It will take you approximately 30 minutes to visit.

How to get there

Nishi Hongan-ji Temple is located in the center of Kyoto about 10-15 minutes on foot from Kyoto Station.

Bus lines 9 and 28 also stop directly in front of the main entrance.
