Palace of the Emperor Galeria

Galeri Palace

The tetrarch, i.e. the co-ruler of the Roman Empire, the emperor Galerius, left significant traces in Thessaloniki. One of the main monuments are the archaeological remains of his palace, where he stayed during his travels to Thessaloniki.

The site has an interesting atmosphere as it is located below the level of the current terrain, closely surrounded by ordinary modern apartment buildings.

The history of the ancient palace

A relatively modest palace complex by Roman standards, it was built by the Emperor Galerius in the largest city of the Balkan part of the Roman Empire, which he ruled. The palace probably dates from 294 to 298 and only the foundations and some of the columns have survived.

The archaeological site of the palace is directly related to the Rotunda and the Arch of Galerius standing nearby, as together they formed the centre of Thessaloniki at the time.

The excavations cover an area of about 100x100 metres, of interest is the still mysterious western part, where an octagonal building apparently stood, the purpose of which archaeologists still argue about.

Entrance fees and opening hours

You can walk directly among the excavations, daily except Mondays between 10:00-17:00.

Admission costs 8 eur and also applies to the Roman Forum.

For most visitors, however, the view from the surrounding streets, from which you can see all parts of Galerius Palace, will suffice.
