On the steep slopes of Thessaloniki's Acropolis, below the preserved city walls and above the modern centre, lies the romantic Ano Poli, or Upper Town, often translated as "Old Town".

Book a hotel in central Thessaloniki

Get lost in the narrow backstreets and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of old Thessaloniki.

Stroll through the picturesque quarter with views

The alleys in Ano Poli are the steepest in all of Thessaloniki, so ideally take the number 23 bus to the Trigonion Fortification and take the roughly 40-minute walk back to the centre of Thessaloniki, just through the Upper Town.

Winding streets with tired cobblestones are interspersed in many places with steep staircases and random trees, all flanked by low houses with wooden shutters and numerous balconies.

Many of them are irreversibly marked by the ravages of time, but many are beautifully restored and the smell of barbecue often wafts from the front gardens.

Yes Poli is an old, quiet, yet authentically vibrant neighbourhood with minimal tourists, small cafes and grocery stores. Hundreds of cats will be watching your steps from around the corner, from under parked cars or simply from the fences of small gardens.

Every few dozen metres you will be surprised by unusual views of the distant Aegean Sea through the narrow openings between the houses.

Accommodation in Ano Poli

Experience the calming atmosphere of Ano Poli with everything you need and book your accommodation here. You'll be looking in vain for large hotels, but you'll be surprised by some great homely guesthouses or apartments.

Prices here are not out of line with the Thessaloniki average, and you'll pay on average from 26 eur 48 eur for 2 per night.

Top-rated accommodations include Irodotou Studio in the quieter eastern part of Ano Poli or Victoria's Apartment in the pretty little square.
