Corsica is full of waterfalls, river cascades and photogenic valleys, but the Cascade des Anglais on the Agnone River is one of the most beautiful and most visited.
A place to relax on the GR-20
The English Cascades were already popular on a large scale at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries with English tourists heading to the central Corsica region. This is also the name of the system of more than 20 waterfalls that make their way through the granite boulders from Monte d'Oro to the valley village of Vivario.
The Cascade des Anglais lies on the popular trek across Corsica marked GR-20 and serves as a popular resting place. You can swim in the many pools and sunbathe on the huge smooth stones.
However, if you only want to visit the cascades, there is a total of 6 km of very easy walking from Vizzavona station, where there is also a large car park.
Accommodation
If you would like to spend a few days hiking in this part of Corsica, there are several accommodation options.
- Hotel Monte d'Oro - A beautiful hotel in traditional Corsican style only about 350 metres from the cascades in the middle of pure nature
- Hotel U Campanile - a well rated hotel in the centre of Vivario with great value for money (you can also book a night under 73 eur)
How to get there?
The English Cascades are one of the few places that can be easily reached by public transport. Just 3km from the Cascades, Vizzavona station is at the starting point of the hiking trails and is crossed 3-4 times a day by trains on the main Corsican line from Ajaccio via Corte to Bastia. Timetables and ticket prices can be found on the cf-corse.corsica website.
Free parking is available in the car park at the Col de Vizzavona pass about 400 metres from the Cascades.
