Where to stay in Sal

Sal

The vast majority of tourists go to Sal as part of an organized tour through a travel agency. For both them and individual travellers we have prepared a practical overview of where to choose a hotel for your holiday on Sal.

You can find a complete and clear comparison of all tours in our comparison tool - the cheapest holidays to Sal.

Where to stay

There are around 60 accommodation options on Salu, ranging from guesthouses to family-run hotels to luxury resorts. More than 90% of these are located in the south and southwest of the island near the town of Santa Maria.

Espargos

There are 6 budget guesthouses and hostels in the capital. They do not serve tourists but rather foreign workers. Do not stay in this area.

Palmeira

The main port of Palmeira will offer 2 better quality accommodations for individual travelers - divers and those arriving by boat. Travel agents do not offer this location and we do not recommend staying here either.

Murdeira

A small tourist village in the resort of Beirona is specific for its absolute tranquility. There is only one accommodation and a few private villas.

The hotel itself is more of a tourist resort, as instead of a hotel building you will find several houses and large apartments. The name itself suggests that it is a grouping of buildings rather than a single complex.

In Murdeira, or Beiron if you prefer, you will find a sandy beach with free access to the sea and a coral reef. From the beach there is a beautiful view of Lion Mountain in the northwest of the island.

The 4* resort Murdeira Village can be purchased individually or as part of a tour:

  • Murdeira Village resort via Booking.com(individually)
  • Murdeira Village resort in our tour comparison(with tour operator)

The journey from the airport will cost you between 10 and 15 eur by taxi.

Santa Maria

The real resort with everything everywhere is in the south of the island near the town of Santa Maria. Here you will find 3 locations where quality hotels and luxury resorts are concentrated. The first two are flanked by a large sandy beach that gradually stretches from the western side, across the southwestern tip to the pier at Santa Maria, where you'll find the third location in the township.

The first (1) site is on the west side of the island before arriving at Santa Maria. There are about 8 large resorts here, the most important of which are those belonging to the Meliá hotel chain.

  • 5* Melia Dunas Beach Resort
  • 5* Melia Llana Beach Resort
  • 5* Melia Tortuga Beach Resort and Spa
  • I travel individually: listed hotels on Booking.com

The other second (2) location is on the very southwestern tip of Sal. The huge sand dune offers ideal conditions for relaxing on the beach and entering the ocean. There are again only a few units of large resorts, this time the RIU chain, but also one luxury and really nice Hilton.

  • 5* RIU Cabo Verde
  • 5* RIU Funana
  • 5* RIU Palace Santa Maria
  • 5* Hilton Cabo Verde Sal Resort
  • I'm travelling individually: you can only book the Hilton on Booking.com

This location is still in a quiet part of the island completely cut off from the hustle and bustle of the town. On the border between the quiet part and Santa Maria you will find 2 more well-known cheaper resorts. These are:

  • 4* Oasis Salinas Sea
  • 4* Oasis Belorizonte

And the third (3) last location is the very urban development in Santa Maria. Here you will find typically cheaper urban 3* hotels and guesthouses, which you can buy both as part of organized tours through a tour operator or individually.

You can finda list of city hotels on Booking.com.

Hotel and tour prices

The question of prices is quite legitimate in the case of Cape Verde. Although it is an African destination, it is certainly not one of the cheaper ones, quite the opposite. This is also due to the high standard of services, which, for example, cannot be compared with Egypt at all.

The standard price of a trip with breakfast in a city hotel in Santa Maria will cost you around 20 thousand crowns. For a trip to a luxury resort with all-inclusive, count on a 4* price around 916 eur and for 5* the ceiling is 1209 eur per week per person.

Individual accommodation on Booking.com is much cheaper. Unfortunately only in standard hotels. Typical prices:

  • A week without meals in Murdeira for 330 eur (for 2 people).
  • a week with breakfast in Santa Maria around 476 eur (for 2 people)
  • a week with breakfast at the Hilton for 1099 eur (for 2 people)
  • a week with half board at the Hilton for 1649 eur (for 2 persons)

In short, an all-inclusive vacation even with the price of airfare is cheaper through a travel agency than individually.
