The second busiest airport in the whole of northern Spain, it is located 13 km from the famous pilgrimage city of Santiago de Compostela and handles over 2.5 million passengers a year.
Vueling and Ryanair have smaller bases here, with most routes heading across Spain or to Western Europe. The importance of the airport for the whole region of Galicia and the surrounding area is demonstrated by the construction of a new spacious terminal in 2011.
Santiago airport is being targeted by the Galician government for various airline concessions, causing the decline of two other airports in the region - La Courna LCG and Vigo VGO.
