There are a wide range of transport options from the airport.
For individual travellers who want to explore Jamaica on their own, car hire is the most convenient way.
If you are heading to Jamaica for a beach holiday, the most convenient way to get to your hotel is by taxi or pre-arranged transfer.
Car rental
There are many counters in the arrivals hall of several mostly multinational well-known car rental companies.
A week's rental of a small car in high season works out at around 450 usd. Off-season prices also drop to 200 usd per week.
It is advisable to book your car rental well in advance (3 months or more), especially if you are heading to Montego Bay between December and March when the high season is in full swing.
If you book your car just before your trip, you run the risk that only large, expensive cars will remain available.

Pre-arranged transfer
A very popular option is to arrange a transfer from the airport in advance.
The transport company counters are still in the arrivals hall, so you don't have to go out and expose yourself to offers from taxi drivers.
If you're staying at a large resort, the hotel will often offer its own transfer service.
Alternatively, you can use one of the many companies.
Prices are per 2 people. There are usually discounts for more people.
- Oyster Bay - 70 usd
- Ocho Rios - 150 usd
- Montego Bay - 40 usd
- Negril - 105 usd
Example of companies offering airport transfers:
Regular Taxi/Uber
Regular taxis are a somewhat opaque mode of transportation for tourists in Montego Bay. Taxameters are not used and although there are fixed prices to specific destinations, taxi drivers often inflate prices for tourists.
Rather, we recommend using taxis through the Uber mobile app, which works reliably in Montego Bay.
Prices are calculated based on current demand, and on average you'll pay about 600 jmd.
Link buses
Public transport buses also stop at the airport.
Kuntsford Express long-distance buses
A reliable intercity service is provided by Kuntsford Express, whose buses stop right outside the terminal.
Timetables and online ticketing can be found on the official website knutsfordexpress.com.
Examples of routes and ticket prices:
- Negril - 2 350 jmd, runs twice daily
- Ocho Rios - 2 900 jmd, runs twice daily
- Kingston -4 100 jmd, runs up to 8 times a day
- Falmouth - 1 350 jmd, runs up to 8 times a day
- Savanna la Mar - 1 350 jmd, runs 1x daily
Local buses
There is a local bus service between the airport and downtown Montego Bay often referred to as "Route 2" but sometimes a bus without a route designation runs.
The bus stops in front of the terminal, but for practical purposes this mode of transport is unusable. Sometimes the buses do not go in front of the terminal at all and only stop at the roundabout about 450 metres from the airport.
It is not even possible to find out the timetable. The bus runs on average 1-2 times per hour. The ticket costs 140 jmd and is paid in cash at the driver.
