Named after the country's first Prime Minister, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the airport is the main and almost only gateway to the island of Mauritius.

The terminal is located in the eastern part of the island less than 50 km from the capital Port Louis and 3 km from the port city of Mahebourg.
