Named after O.R. Tambo, former President of South Africa, the airport is the largest on the continent. Along with the airport Cape Town CPT Johannesburg is the main gateway to South Africa and the base of the national airline, South African Airways.

The centre of Johannesburg is about 20 km away, while the capital Pretoria is 48 km away.

Johannesburg Airport has an extensive network of domestic routes and connections to African countries.

Long-distance flights run from JNB to virtually every major city on every continent. The busiest routes are to London, Amsterdam, New York, Dubai and Doha.
