The airport near Madeira's capital, Funchal (23 km), is well known among aviation enthusiasts for its interesting landing method and especially for its runway, which is built one third on high pillars above the sea cliff to extend its length.
More often than not, delays are to be expected on flights to Madeira due to the often very windy weather, which makes landing impossible.
In 2016, the airport was named after footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, who was born in Madeira. This makes it one of the few airports in the world to be named after a living person.
Flights to Madeira are most often bought on flytap.com, the Portuguese national airline, which flies several times a day from Lisbon, offering connecting flights to the rest of the world.
Cheap tickets to Lisbon or Porto are also available through easyJet. However, many other airlines fly to Madeira Airport, mainly from Western and Central Europe.
