The smaller of Chicago's two airports, Midway is located on the south side of the city, about 18 km from downtown Chicago.
After the construction of the large O'Hare International Airport, Midway became primarily a domestic hub and one of the main bases of Southwest Airlines.
An interesting feature of the airport is the near-ideal square shape of the entire complex, with pairs of runways forming diagonals.
The surrounding area is a densely built-up residential area, making spatial development of the airport impossible, making the terminal relatively small and congested at peak times.
