Transportation from Anchorage Airport

Alaska

The airport is connected to the city centre by bus number 40 for $2.

However, most travellers will use one of the many car rental companies at the airport.

Car rental

A car is almost a necessity for traveling through Alaska, so we recommend renting a car as soon as you arrive.

We recommend booking a car at least 2-3 months in advance, especially if you are traveling to Anchorage during the summer season. Weekly rental rates range between 500 usd and 920 usd depending on the timeliness of the reservation.

Rental car counters are located in the parking garage building across from the South Terminal.

City bus

If you'll be staying in Anchorage for 1 or 2 days before heading to the national parks, rent a car when you leave town.

Anchorage has a good public transportation network that will also get you to the airport.

The bus stop is outside the south terminal and all bus routes in the city have the same fare.

  • 2 usd - 1 ride (no transfers between buses)
  • 5 usd - Full day fare for unlimited travel on a given calendar day (expires at midnight - so not valid for 24 hours)
  • Current ticket prices: muni.org/Fares

Tickets can be purchased in exact cash from the driver or via the mobile app People Mover.

The following bus routes operate to the airport:

  • 40 - goes directly to downtown Anchorage
    • Travel time - 20 minutes
    • Frequency - 15 minutes (30-60 minutes in the evenings and on weekends)
    • Last bus from the airport - 11:30 p.m. / 7:20 p.m. on weekends
    • First bus from downtown - 6:33 a.m. / 8:09 a.m. on weekends
    • Timetable: muni.org/Route40
  • 65 - goes to Dimond Center station in south Anchorage

Taxi, Uber, Lyft

The classic taxi stand is always on the ground floor at both terminals.

For travel to/from the airport, regular meters are used and the price is based on distance traveled and time. To the city centre, you can usually pay between 19 usd and 22 usd.

Uber and Lyft mobile apps also operate in Anchorage. The only place to park these cars is at the south terminal on level 2 (departures). Prices are similar to regular taxis.

Train

There is a modern Alaska Railroad station in front of the south terminal.

However, there are currently no regular trains to the airport, and the station is only used by occasional charter trains for passengers heading out on large cruise ship cruises.
