Getting from Amsterdam Airport

Amsterdam

Transport to Schiphol Airport is provided by rail from all over the Netherlands, but there are also many bus routes to the centre of Amsterdam and its suburbs. Amsterdam is one of the most accessible airports in Europe.

Train or bus?

The train is the fastest option to get from the airport to the centre of Amsterdam (Centraal Station) and the southern part of the city (Zuid). It is also the cheapest form of transport for single journeys, with a ticket bought online costing 4,90 eur.

Bus 369 is the cheapest, as it is the only airport service operated by GVB. There is a 24-hour ticket for GVB trams, metros and buses within Amsterdam for 9 eur and a 60-minute transfer ticket for 3,40 eur.

Use bus 397 for a quick trip to the museum district "Museumsplein". The price of a transfer ticket for 90 minutes is 6,50 eur

Destination Travel time Price Frequency
Train Centraal, Sloterdijk, Zuid 17 minutes 4,90 eur 4-10 minutes
Bus 397 Museumsplein, Elandsgracht 38 minutes 6,50 eur 5-8 minutes
Bus 369 Sloterdijk 37 minutes 3,40 eur 8-10 minutes
Bus 300 Bijlmer Arena, Haarlem 30 minutes 6,50 eur 8-10 minutes

Train (Amsterdam)

The station is located directly under the terminal, you don't even have to go outside the arrivals hall, just take the escalator down to the platform.

The connection is very frequent (about once every 4 to 10 minutes). From the airport you can get to Centraal Station in 15 minutes.

Train tickets

Purchase your ticket from the yellow machines outside the entrance to the underground station and mark it contactlessly at the turnstiles before entering the platform. It costs 4,90 eur + 1 eur to print a paper ticket on the spot.

The ticket price for Amsterdam Zuid South Station is 3,30 eur.

It is more convenient to buy a ticket online at the Dutch Railways website ns.nl or on the mobile app (see ns.nl/ns-app), where the €1 fee for a paper ticket is waived.

The ticket can be used on any train on any given calendar day, including all long-distance trains between the airport and Amsterdam.

On trains, the 24-hour (2- and 3-day) public transport "Amsterdam Travel Ticket" (see: ns.nl/amsterdam-travel-ticket) for 18 eur (or 24 eur for 2-day and 30 eur for 3-day).

However, you cannot use the 24-hour ticket for €9, which is only valid for tram, metro and bus travel within the GVB transport company. These are only valid for bus 369 (see info below).

  • Travel time Centraal - 14-17 minutes
  • Frequency - 4-10 minutes
  • Fares - 4,90 eur at Centraal station, 3,30 eur at Zuid station
  • First connections from Centraal Station - 3:46, 4:46, 5:15, 5:31
  • First connections from Zuid station - 5:37, 6:11
  • Last connections from the airport - 0:32, 1:11, 2:03

Express bus 397

The Amsterdam Airport Express bus 397 (carrier website: Connexxion.nl), which runs alongside the Van Gogh Museum or the Rijksmuseum, is convenient for getting to the historic centre without changing buses.

However, it has several stops along the way at different locations. The detailed route is plotted in the map below.

A one-way ticket costs 6,50 eur and is valid for 90 minutes including transfers to trams, metro and other buses in Amsterdam.

The ticket can be purchased in several ways:

  • Online on the website terravision.com
  • With your own contactless card by attaching it to the reader on the bus (at each boarding and alighting).
  • At the ticket booth in front of the terminal (payment by card only)

On the Terravision website there are only two destinations to choose from in the centre "Leidseplein" and "Museumsplein", but you can get on/off at any stop along the route: the price is always the same. Likewise, you can use any connection, not just the one shown on the ticket.

On line 397, it is also possible to use the 24-hour "Amsterdam Travel Ticket" for 18 eur (or 2- and 3-day tickets), but it is not possible to use the 24-hour ticket for the transport company GVB for €9. The bus departs from platforms B15-19.

Line 397 runs 24 hours a day, but is designated as line N97 at night.

  • Travel time Museumsplein - 38 minutes
  • Frequency - 5-8 minutes (60 minutes at night)
  • Fares - 6,50 eur
  • First and last connections - the line operates 24 hours
  • Timetable: connexxion.nl/amsterdam-airport-express

Bus 369

The cheapest way to get there is bus line 369 to Sloterdijk station, where you can change to the tram towards the centre.

A ticket for this bus costs 3,40 eur (60 minute change) and, unlike the train or bus 397, you can also use a 24-hour GVB ticket for 9 eur. You can also buy a 48-hour ticket for 15 eur or a 72-hour ticket for 21 eur.

These tickets are valid on all GVB blue and white city buses, trams and metro. They are not valid on non-GVB trains and buses.

Tickets for GVB at the airport cannot be purchased from any ticket machine, but only via the mobile app. You can also pay the 60-minute fare inside the bus with your own contactless card by attaching it to the reader at boarding and alighting.

In Amsterdam, there are no daily limits for contactless payments, so if you want to use the 24-hour fare for 9 eur, you only need to make a purchase via the GVB mobile app.

The 369 bus to Sloterdijk Station takes just under 40 minutes, where you can change to tram 19 for a further 30 minutes to the city centre, or take a longer metro ride.

  • Travel time to Sloterdijk - 37 minutes
  • Frequency - 8-10 minutes
  • Fares - 3,40 eur
  • First connection from Sloterdijk station - 4:40 (4:45 on weekends and public holidays)
  • Last connection from the airport - 0:47
  • Timetable: reisinfo.gvb.nl/369

Bus 341

Once every 15 minutes, the 341 bus also runs from the same stop as the 397 express line to Amsterdam Zuid station in the south of Amsterdam.

The line is operated by Connexion and therefore the cheap tickets of the transport company GVB cannot be used here either.

The journey to Zuid station will cost 6,50 eur (connecting for 90 minutes) and is therefore more expensive than the train journey.

Bus 300

Bus 300 provides a quick connection to the southernmost part of modern Amsterdam around Bijlmer ArenA station and also to Haarlem.

The same tickets apply as on line 397, i.e. for 6,50 eur for 90 minutes, with the possibility to change to trams, metro and other buses in Amsterdam and Haarlem.

You buy your ticket by attaching your own card to the reader inside the bus at each boarding and alighting point or at the ticket booth at the bus stop.

Local buses

For transport to different parts of Amsterdam, you can also use the 186, 187, 194 and 310 local buses, which stop at several locations.

Line 185 only goes to the judicial complex near the airport, while the other buses go to nearby communities outside Amsterdam. Tickets for these buses can be bought from 3,40 eur to about 6,50 eur depending on the distance and the carrier.

To find connections around the surrounding municipalities or to specific stops, visit, for example, 9292.nl/en.

By bike

Cycling is extremely popular in the Netherlands, and separate cycle paths run criss-cross not only Amsterdam, but the entire country.

Clearly signposted cycle paths will even take you to the airport. There are several Donkey Republic bike-sharing stations right outside the terminal.

To use them, you need to download the mobile app. The price for a 30-minute ride is 1 eur and it takes about 45-60 minutes (14 km) to reach the full centre of Amsterdam on the flat road, see the route map.

Trains to Rotterdam, The Hague and the whole of the Netherlands

The airport is home to one of the busiest train stations in the Netherlands, with trains to all parts of the country and neighbouring countries. For example, the train to Rotterdam takes less than half an hour and costs 14,50 eur, while Den Haag can be reached in 40 minutes and costs 9,80 eur.

Timetables can be found on the Dutch Railways website ns.nl. You can also use the mobile app to buy tickets.

Taxi, Uber, Bolt

The official taxi stand is clearly marked and located right in front of the main exit.

The current fares are posted and the drivers drive strictly according to the meter. You can only pay by card and the journey to the centre of Amsterdam costs around 60 eur.

Avoid the offers of fake taxi drivers who stand by with yellow signs and shout "taxi" loudly.

For a cheaper service, mobile apps Uber or Bolt offer a ride to Centraal Station from 45 eur.

The location of the cars using the mobile apps is about 200 metres from the main entrance to the terminal behind the Sheraton Hotel.

To Keukenhof

There is a direct bus line number 858 from the airport to the Keukenhof flower park. You can buy a combined return bus ticket which includes entry to the park for 25 eur. The journey takes about 20 minutes.

Find out practical information about the Keukenhof Flower Park in our guide.
