The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is the most famous gallery of modern art, mostly abstract. It is the first of a series of Guggenheim Foundation museums now located around the world.

The museum's striking, unusual and provocative building is located at the corner of 5th. Avenue and 89th Street. Street and features hundreds of works of modern art by leading greats, including Guggenheim himself, Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh and Edouard Manet.

The Guggenheim collections

The main part of the exhibition is the original collection of Salomon Guggenheim, who focused mainly on interwar abstract artists, most of them French.

Museum building

The building in which the Guggenheim Museum is housed also attracts attention. The modernist structure was built between 1956 and 1959 and designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The internal ramp without supporting columns was designed by civil engineer Jaroslav Josef Polívka.

The round and relatively low cylindrical building contrasts sharply with the surrounding development of rectangular skyscrapers and despite the fact that it is literally drowned among them, thanks to its novel design and white façade it stands out by far.
