Colourful houses and the Town Hall on the Stary Rynek in Poznan

The most photographed place in all of Poznan is in the very centre of the city in the Old Town. A row of colourful houses is located right next to the City Hall.

The merchants' houses date back to the 16th century, when the original wooden huts were replaced by narrow houses. There were shops on the ground floor and living quarters on the upper floors.

Today, the sale of fish, salt, candles, torches and other everyday objects has been replaced by street artists who offer their paintings and tourist items in the arcades of the houses.

Although the buildings have been repaired and renovated several times, the sandstone columns in the arcades have been preserved. The oldest one bears the date 1535 and the oldest house dates back to 1538.
