Sunnmøre Museum

Sunnmore Museum

The Sunnmøre Open Air Museum is essentially an open-air museum, spread over 120 hectares and featuring 56 original houses.

Many of the buildings are accessible from the inside and their exhibitions offer an insight into life, work and traditions from the Stone Age to the early 20th century.

At the open-air museum you can also see an extensive collection of ships, including replicas of original Viking vessels. During the summer, it is possible to take a ride on a Viking ship.

The Sunnmøre Museum is set in beautiful parkland and you should set aside about 1 hour to visit it.

Entrance fees and opening hours

The opening hours of the open-air museum are as follows:

  • May to September - 10:00 to 17:00 every day.
  • October to April - Tuesday to Friday 11:00 to 17:00, weekends 12:00 to 16:00, closed on Mondays

Admission to the museum for an adult costs 100 nok.

Children under 18 get in for free, seniors or students do not get discounted admission.

The site itself is accessible outside of opening hours. So if you arrive here on a closing day, for example, don't despair and enjoy a leisurely stroll among the historic houses and through the woods along the trail to the west of the peninsula, where you'll get an iconic view of the entire ålesund area.

Outside opening hours, however, you won't be able to see inside the houses or view the Viking ship exhibit.

How to get there

The "Sunnmøre Museum" bus stop is located next to the museum, through which many bus routes pass to the centre of Ålesund, as well as to destinations further afield.

Bus lines 1, 3, 12, 100 and the FB61 bus to Alesund Airport stop at the bus stop.

You can find a connection finder at reise.frammr.no and details about buses in the city in the Transport chapter.
