Hiking and sightseeing

Norway is a country made for trekking and hiking.

Even in Ålesund itself, you can go on shorter hikes in the countryside and keep yourself busy for the day.

• Aksla - the most famous hill in the city with an iconic view of the whole of Ålesund. You can go up the 418 steps, but you can also take a longer and less steep route from several points.
• Sukkertoppen - the highest mountain on the island of Hess is also the highest within Ålesund's city limits at 314 metres. The hike is quite challenging and steep, but short and can be done in an hour.
• Høgkubben - a 450 metre high hill east of town with many marked hiking trails, divine views and several mountain lakes. From the centre of Ålesund you can get here, for example, by bus line 2 to the stop "Blindheimssenteret". A map of the hiking routes is available, for example, on mapy.cz.

The most famous places to walk are on Hessa Island in the west or Aksla Peak in the east. Details in the chapter "What to see".

Kayaking

Ålesund is a city on the water, so it is desirable to get to know it from this perspective as well. At the waterfront branch of Uteguiden AS, the city's largest tour company, you can arrange a guided kayaking tour.

Discover Art Nouveau architecture

Take a walk through the small but very nicely landscaped centre of Ålesund and discover the unique architecture of the town.

After a devastating fire in 1904, virtually the entire town centre had to be rebuilt.

Construction took place between 1904 and 1907, when the Art Nouveau architectural style was popular in many major European cities and Ålesund was inspired by it.

A walk around the small town takes about an hour, or two hours if you stop at one of the many great cafes.

Explore the surrounding islands

Ålesund's surroundings are full of small islands, where there are always a few villages with typical colourful houses, a few hills and always a hiking trail.

If you don't have time to explore further afield in the Møre og Romsdal region, the islands around here are the perfect way to experience the Norwegian countryside.

Which islands are easiest to reach by public transport?

• Godøya - the island with the famous Alnes lighthouse, from the centre take bus number 3 to the Ytterland stop and then take bus number 32
• Sula - a larger island with the town of Langevåg, from where you can go on beautiful longer hikes of up to 15 km. There is an hourly ferry between Ålesund (docked at the bus station) and Langevåg

Fishing

Norway is a mecca for fishermen, so many consider catching fish in Norway to be the pinnacle of a fishing career. Like many towns in Norway, Ålesund is a former fishing town, so it's no problem to head down to the waterfront and catch something for lunch or dinner on a rod.

Catching fish in the waters of the fjords becomes a bigger experience. The fishing eldorado is the Sykkylven area, where you can catch fish in the fjords or rivers.
