Nowadays, tourists hardly come across a traditional ethnic village in the Bornean jungle anymore. If you still want to learn about the culture, history and gastronomy of the indigenous people of Borneo, head to the cultural village of Mari Mari.
This living open-air museum is a collection of examples of the traditional life of Borneo's main ethnic groups. Each tour lasts 3 hours and includes dance performances, various craft demonstrations, tasting of local specialties and other activities.
Entrance fees and opening hours
The Mari Mari Cultural Village can only be visited as part of an organised tour. These tours take place every day at 10:00 and 14:00.
You pay 130 myr per adult and 110 myr per child for the tour (Malaysians only pay 110/100 myr). The ticket includes a guided visit to five ethnic houses, traditional activities and workshops, cultural performances and food.
Transportation Mari Mari Cultural Village
Mari Mari village is approximately 45 minutes drive from Kota Kinabalu city. You can drive directly to the village by rental car, or take a taxi or Grab.
The other option is to take part in an organised tour from Kota Kinabalu, but in this case you will pay a substantial extra cost.
