In addition to its 40 million copies, the building hosts various cultural events and is a tourist attraction in its own right thanks to its novel modern architecture.
The name Black Diamond has given the library the shape and colouring of the building. It is built of sharply shaped blocks of black Zimbabwean granite and was completed in 1999.
Admission to the building is free every weekday from 8am to 9pm, Saturday until 7pm and remains closed on Sundays.
