On the eastern side of Santorini, often referred to as Thira, there is a small international airport. This serves flights to Athens and other Greek airports for most of the year, but in the summer season it receives a large number of low-cost and charter flights from all over Europe.
The simple and very small terminal is absolutely inadequate for summer traffic, so especially in July and August be prepared for apocalyptic images of a packed airport lobby, with check-in queues often stretching all the way outside. Even so, somehow the organisation works and a 2-hour reserve will do the trick.
