Although the airport in the provincial town of Charlotte in North Carolina is not situated near any major city centre, its favourable geographical location means it ranks among the 15 busiest airports in the US and is a major hub for American Airlines.
Most flights are domestic, but a relatively large number of routes from the Caribbean and Europe also serve the airport.
Partly because Charlotte Airport has only one terminal, it is very popular for transfers between the north and south of the US. Queues at immigration are also generally shorter in Charlotte, so it is becoming increasingly popular for transfers from Europe to the US.
