Getting around Ålesund

Alesund

Ålesund is spread over 3 islands, geographically it is a long strip of islands connected by bridges. Within the narrower centre there is no problem to use only your own feet.

If you want to head to the Sunnmøre Museum, for example, which is about 5 km from the centre of Ålesund, you can't do without public transport. This is provided by FRAM in Ålesund and throughout Møre og Romsdal.

On foot

Within Ålesund city centre, walking is the most practical and comfortable way to get around.

The city is small and the tourist attractions are concentrated in a relatively small area around the Alesundet Channel.

You can walk around the whole centre of Ålesund, including the famous Aksla hill, with breaks for rest or lunch in about 3 hours.

City buses

Most bus routes start, end or pass through the centre of Ålesund.

There are two main bus transfer stations in the city, where most city and intercity bus lines stop:

  • Ålesund rutebilstajson in the city centre (see map)
  • Moa trafikkterminal on the eastern edge (see map)

Frequent lines

There are 4 main bus routes in Ålesund:

  • Line 1 - runs through the whole town from the east to the very west. It is the only one that also goes to the island of Hessa, where you can visit, for example, the Atlanterhavsparken aquarium or the Sukkertoppen hills. It also stops at the Sunnmøre Museum and connects the two main bus stations.
    • Frequency 15-30 minutes, 30-60 minutes on weekends
  • Line 2 - runs from the bus station in central Ålesund via Moa station to the Høgkubben area. Also stops at SunnmøreMuseum
    • Frequency 10-20 minutes
  • Line 3 - goes from the bus station in Ålesund city centre to the islands of Valderoya and Vigra (does not stop at the airport)
    • Frequency 30-60 minutes
  • Line 4 - connects Moa bus station and Langevåg town
    • Frequency 30-60 minutes

You can also use lines 100, 230 and 681 between the two bus stations Ålesund and Moa.

Timetables and line maps can be found on the website: frammr.no/timetables-and-line-maps.

It is more convenient to search for connections by individual stops, which can be found at reise.frammr.no or on the Fram mobile app.
