Where to stay in Macau

Macau

Macau is a popular destination for gambling and casino enthusiasts, but also a great place for day or two-day trips from Hong Kong.

Check out our tips on specific hotels, the best neighbourhoods to stay in and guide prices for hotels in Macau.

Where to book a hotel in Macau

Large resorts with casinos are among the most expensive hotels in Asia, but you'll also find reasonably priced hotels, especially in the historic centre.

In Southeast Asia's traditionally strong portal agoda.com Macau also offers the most accommodation. Especially when it comes to cheaper hostels, there is more choice on Agoda than on other portals.

On the other hand, for larger international and luxury hotels, it is usually better to book through booking.com.

In general, however, even for smaller hotels, it cannot be said that Agoda is always more convenient. It is always worth comparing the two main portals.

The best neighbourhoods in Macau and tips on hotels

Macau is not a sprawling city and effectively has only two main areas where most hotels are located.

Macau Peninsula (Sé)

The best part of the city if you want to explore the historic centre and older parts of Macau. On the peninsula you will also find the main road and pedestrian border crossings to China and Hong Kong and the "Outer Harbour".

If you stay on the Macau Peninsula, the historic centre and the promenades around the Wynn or Sands hotels are easily accessible on foot.

Great hotels with casinos

Although the main gambling area lies in the modern part of Taipa, even in the centre you'll find the large resorts with casinos that kicked off Macau's era as the world's gambling hub at the turn of the millennium.

Taipa Island

Also known as Cotai, the centre of Taipa Island is filled almost exclusively with huge hotel and casino complexes.

Stay here if you're travelling to Macau primarily for the casinos.

Macau hotel prices

Macau is not your typical cheap Asian city, but an expensive metropolis comparable to, for example, neighbouring Hong Kong.

You can get accommodation in nice 4* hotels near the centre or near the casinos from 120 usd, while the cheapest 5* hotels start at around 180 usd per night.

The cheapest accommodation in Macau tends to be in the low season, from May to October, while the most expensive is from December to March. However, as Macau is not typically a holiday destination, the price differences are not as staggering as, say, Thai resorts or Bali.
