Weather in Chalkidiki and best time to go

Chalkidiki

Chalkidiki is located in the northernmost part of Greece with mountain ranges at a relatively short distance, so the climate is a bit more pleasant and cooler than, for example, Crete or other Aegean islands.

However, we are still in southern Europe, so Chalkidiki has a typical Mediterranean climate, with only minor extremes during the summer and slightly wetter winters than in the more southern parts of Greece.

Normal summer temperatures soar to between 29 and 32°C with minimal rainfall, while in winter it rains quite often and temperatures drop below 7°C. Even with the wet winters, however, Chalkidiki is covered in forests and greenery, which only makes your stay more pleasant.

Chalkidiki during the year

What is the weather like during the different months of the year?

Weather in January

January is the coldest month of the year, with an average temperature of around 7°C, cold winds blowing off the mountains and occasional rain, which occasionally scatters in showers across the Halkidiki area.

Most services are closed and there's not much fun to be had during January.

Weather in February

Statistically, February sees a decline in rainfall, with only sporadic light showers, but even so, it's often cloudy and maximum temperatures rise to just 10°C.

February is not an ideal month to visit Halkidiki either.

Weather in March

Spring weather is slow to arrive. The air warms up to an average of 13 °C and there are periodic light rain showers, usually at least 15 days a month, which can last for several hours at a time.

Even in March, the vast majority of services remain closed and Halkidiki is orphaned.

Weather in April

April weather in Halkidiki is very similar to the April weather we know in many parts of the world. Frequent showers are replaced by clear skies and temperatures can be anywhere between 12 and 20°C.

But it's definitely not a good time for swimming in the sea, with water temperatures barely reaching 15°C, which is why most hotels and services are closed even during April.

Weather in May

During May, summer weather makes its first appearance. Average temperatures reach 21 °C, but bright days with summer temperatures over 25 °C are no exception.

The first hotels open in the resorts, but the weather is more conducive to sunbathing on the beaches.

There has been little rain, but sea temperatures have only risen to 19 °C so far.

Weather in June

The summer season gets into full swing in June. Normal temperatures fluctuate between 25 and 28 °C and the sky is mostly sunny during the day. Although statistics show that there is a relatively large amount of rain in June, it is mostly concentrated in evening and night thunderstorms.

Sea water temperatures rise to between 23 and 24 °C.

Weather in July

July temperatures average between 28 and 32 °C, with the hottest part of Halkidiki being the west coast and the promontory of Kassandra, where temperatures can often rise above 35 °C. There is little rain and almost exclusively at night.

You can bathe in the sea with an average temperature of 26 °C.

Weather in August

August is the hottest month of the year in Halkidiki. Temperatures normally rise to between 30 and 33 °C, and over 35 °C on the west coast.

The sea water is also the warmest of the year during August, with temperatures rising to 27 °C.

Weather in September

September is still typically summer weather, and with significantly cheaper hotels and smaller crowds, this month is often cited as the best for summer holidays.

Temperatures rise to an average of 24 to 26 °C and there is little rain in the form of infrequent light showers.

The sea water is around 25 °C.

Weather in October

For the hardier individuals, it is possible to go to Halkidiki for the sea during October. You can look forward to temperatures between 20 and 23 °C, just be prepared for cooler mornings and evenings. Despite the approach of autumn, rainfall is at a level that won't particularly affect the quality of your holiday.

The sea water cools more slowly than the air and averages around 21 °C.

Weather in November

In November, most services close, rain increases significantly and temperatures drop to an average of 14°C.

Chalkidiki goes into hibernation and, apart from trips to quiet villages where life suddenly moves at a completely different pace to summer, there are few holiday activities.

Weather in December

December daytime temperatures drop to between 6 and 10 °C. The skies are often cloudy with frequent showers, and overall the weather in December is the least favourable for visiting the region.

When to go to Chalkidiki

The vast majority of travellers come to Halkidiki to enjoy the sun, beautiful beaches and swimming in the sea. The best months for these activities are June to September, with the resorts being significantly less crowded during June and September than in July and August.

Book your hotel in advance

While October is still a good time for the more sedentary individuals to enjoy a seaside holiday, the rest of the year is not a good time to visit Halkidiki as there are few entertainment options apart from the resorts.

In the autumn, winter and spring, you're more likely to head to Thessaloniki for a relaxing weekend in northern Greece.
