Although Vienna is predominantly a historic city, there is no shortage of modern office centres with many high-rise buildings.

If you're a fan of similar districts, make sure to head to the place officially known as Vienna International City (VIC), but among the locals as UNO City or Donau City.

The tallest building and the UN headquarters

In this district, you'll find, among other things, Austria's tallest buildingand one of Vienna's landmarks , the DC Tower, with a total height of 220 metres (the tallest structure in the form of the Donauturm transmitter is just a kilometre away), as well as the second tallest, the Millennium Tower, at 202 metres.

The main attraction of UNO City, however, is one of the four UN world headquarters in a sprawling complex of massive concrete buildings in the brutalist style of the 1970s. This puts Vienna alongside New York, Geneva and Nairobi as the other UN headquarters.

Another interesting building is the very modern Catholic church from 2000, which at first glance looks more like a bunker.

Accommodation in UNO-City

The modern district is home to many large international top quality hotels. Even though UNO-City is outside the city centre, the metro station makes it less than 15 minutes to get to central Vienna.

Location and transport

UNO City is located on the other side of the Danube from the main historic centre, but is very easy and quick to reach by public transport:

  • Metro - Kaisermühlen-VIC station (line U1)
