Riddarholm Church

Riddarholm Church

Riddarholm Church is located close to Gamla Stan on the island of Riddarholm and is the final resting place of the Swedish kings.

The 90-metre high tower, together with the German Church (96 metres) and Stockholm City Hall (106 metres), dominates the historic centre and appears on many postcards and promotional material.

The 10 best hotels in Stockholm

Riddarholmskyrkan is one of the most important and most visited churches in Sweden and is much more famous than Stockholm's main cathedral.

The burial place of the Swedish kings

The importance of Riddarholm Church is due to the fact that the underground tombs serve as the final resting place of most of Sweden's kings.

With the exception of Queen Christina, all the successors of Gustav II from 1642 to King Gustav V, who became the last king to be buried in the local royal tombs in 1950, rest in Riddarholm Church.

Gothic jewel

Riddarholm Church is the former seat of Stockholm Abbey and is one of the most important Gothic monuments in Sweden.

The slender Gothic architecture is evident in the exterior and interior, although some minor elements are Baroque.

The church was consecrated at the end of the 13th century.

Admission and opening hours

The church is open every day from May to the end of September. From October to April it is closed in its entirety.

Unfortunately, the tower is not open to the public.

It is open from 10:00 to 17:00.
