Gamla Stan

Gamla Stan

The heart of Stockholm is its Old Town, Gamla Stan in Swedish. The medieval streets with Nordic souvenirs on every corner and classic Swedish restaurants will completely absorb you.

Gamla Stan is largely located on the island of Stadsholmen right in the middle of Stockholm.

You can walk the entire Old Town in 30 minutes, but with several attractions, you could be here for hours.

What to see at Gamla Stan?

The "best" of the Old Town is the picturesque Stortorget square with its colourful merchant houses and pretty historic fountain.

The streets around Stortorget Square are typical of a Hanseatic city on the Baltic Sea at the turn of the 18th and 19th century.

Gamla Stan and its close surroundings are also home to many of Stockholm's leading landmarks. Click on the name of the monument for detailed information.

Also worth a visit is Stockholm's narrowest alley, called Mårten Trotzig Gränd, which has 36 steps and is not even a metre wide in places.

Accommodation at Gamla Stan
