The small and inconspicuous Slottsberget mountain on the banks of the Göta älv river hides a picturesque backdrop with many old and historic houses of architectural value.

At the end of the 19th century, employees of the local shipyard Lindholmens varv were allowed to build their houses on the mountain without urban planning. Thus, small wooden houses slowly began to form a small and now picturesque colony that is worth a walk.

During the 1960s, shipyards planned to blow the mountain away and create a floating harbour in its place. Several years of protests by the old-timers finally turned out well thanks to the shipyard's collapse.

Slottsberget

In the 1980s, the development was fully modernized and the houses gained access to water and sewer. Suddenly, what were originally cheap houses in the suburbs of Gothenburg became lucrative housing.

How to get to Slottsberget

There are two ways to reach the site - by land and by water. Personally, we recommend you combine both options, or at least both harbours that are close to the mountain. This way, you'll get to know not only the old buildings, but also the new modern neighborhood, including the campus of the local university.

You can take a bus from the centre to the Lindholmen bus stop, for example on line 16 or 58. From there, walk through the university to the mountain itself.

Another option is the boat ferry. The boat number 286 connects the two shores almost constantly between Stenpiren and Lindholmspiren harbour. The boat carries passengers for free.

Directly below the mountain is the port of Slottsberget, which is served by ferry number 285 and can also be boarded at Stenpiren or Lilla Bommens Hamn.
