Lagoa do Canario

Lago do Canario

A pleasant stop on the way to the Sete Cidades lakes area will be the small Canario lagoon surrounded by dense macaroni forests with predominantly Japanese cryptomeria. The trees form a dense wall against the outside world, creating an idyllic setting that exudes a divine peace and tranquility at first sight.

Along the way along the lake, we may come across the ruins of an aqueduct. The site is open daily, 8:30am-6pm on weekdays and 10am-7pm on weekends. Entrance is free and parking is also free on an improvised roadside plaza.

Short trek Serra Devassa

Although the lake is pretty, it is more interesting to take the trek known as Serra Devassa, whose starting point is across the road from Lagoa do Canario about 150 metres from the lake.

A short, comfortable drive takes you into grassy undulating plains covered with dense thickets of typical Azorean forest. The Serra Devassa road circles the Lagoa das Éguas lake area with 5 other lagoons. The route is circular and covers a total of 4 km, see the route map.
