Gruta das Torres

Gruta das Torres

The Gruta das Torres is the largest lava tunnel in Portugal, measuring more than 5 km in total. The safest part is open to the public and is about 450 metres long.

This cave was formed by the flow of lava from the now inactive Pico volcano, which found its way over the surface and underground.

Visit the cave

The lava tunnel is only accessible with a guide along a modified walkway, with steps or railings added at dangerous points.

Nevertheless, it is necessary to wear good footwear, at least sneakers. Flip-flops or sandals will not be allowed.

The elevation gain during the cave visit is not dramatic, but the visit is not suitable for people who suffer from claustrophobia.

A helmet and flashlight will be provided at the visitor center.

Entrance to the cave must be booked in advance on the official website parquesnaturais.azores.gov.pt.

We recommend booking at least a week in advance, in the summer season at least 10-14 days in advance. Each tour is only for 15 people and places are often sold out several days in advance.

Entrance fees and opening hours

The ticket price is 10 eur.

Tours take place daily at 9:30am, 11:00am, 2:00pm, 3:30pm and 4:00pm and last approximately 75-90 minutes.

Tours are always available in English or Portuguese.

How to get there

The cave is only accessible by car.

The main entrance is on a minor country road and the turnoffs are not well signposted.
