Miradouro Craveiro Lopes

Miradouro Craveiro Lopes

The most famous viewpoint on Flores is named after a former Portuguese president and is one of the most beautiful places in the Azores.

The viewpoint is just off the main road connecting the town of Fajã Grande on the west with the town of Santa Cruz das Flores on the east coast.

What can you see from the viewpoint?

Miradouro Craveiro Lopes sits on the edge of a 480 metre high perpendicular cliff, offering a divine view of the entire west coast of Flores.

From the viewpoint, you can see the famous Cascata da Ribeira do Ferreiro waterfalls and the entire mountain range that plummets into the Atlantic Ocean.

If you turn your head further west, you can see the picturesque valley with the village of Fajãzinha and the wide Atlantic Ocean. Beyond that, there is nothing but America.

How to get to the viewpoint

The observation deck, with several benches and railings, is right off the main road through the interior of the island. It is only marked with a sign at the relatively last minute.

The 5 best hotels on the west coast

There is a small parking lot at the viewpoint (the parking bay is only in the direction of Faja Grande) for about 5-6 cars. Usually, though, you won't have a problem finding a free parking space.

Unfortunately, there is no walking route around the viewpoint.

When to go to the viewpoint?

Go to Miradouro Craveiro Lopes all day long.

The valley with the village of Fajãzinha and the wide Atlantic Ocean is beautifully lit by the sun in the morning and afternoon.

In the afternoon and evening, the cliffs are again illuminated by the gradually setting sun, which you can watch from the lookout undisturbed all the time before it sets over the horizon.

The least convenient time is midday during the summer, when the sun will be directly above you and slightly against you, so all sides will be against the light.
