Fajã Grande

Faja Grande

The small town of Fajã Grande has just over 200 inhabitants, but it is one of the most important tourist destinations on the island.

It is located in the most beautiful part of the island, under the high cliffs, close to the plateau with volcanic craters filled with lakes, and on the westernmost point of Europe.

Sights and attractions

The centre of Fajã Grande is adorned with a pretty main street with the 19th century "Paroquial de São José" church, which is free to visit throughout the day.

The most famous attraction right in Fajã Grande is the magnificent Poço do Bacalhau waterfall.

By the sea, you can take advantage of several places with access to the water, where natural pools with calm water have been created. However, the Atlantic is cold here all year round, and swimming in the sea is more of a one-wet attraction.

Geography enthusiasts are also attracted by the fact that Fajã Grande is the westernmost municipality in Europe, with the westernmost landmass in Europe.

Where to shop and eat?

Fajã Grande is the only municipality on the west coast where you can find a grocery store, several restaurants or even a bank.

Popular places include the Barraca Q'abana café and restaurant near Europe's westernmost point, or the Papadiamandis restaurant at the end of the main road.

There are two grocery stores here:

  • Mercearia Jose Antonio Ramos Teodosio - a small shop with basic goods on the main street near the church.
    • Monday to Friday 6:30-17:30
    • Saturday 7am-5pm
    • Closed Sundays and holidays
  • Super Faja - formerly a regular supermarket, now open weekday mornings only selling drugstore items.
