Salt flats

Marsalforn Salt Flats

For a long time, salt was obtained in Gozo in the traditional way, using salt pans.

On the north coast of the island, west of Marsalforn, there is a strip of about 3 kilometres long where you can walk in the immediate vicinity of salt pans that are more than 300 years old.

The seawater gradually evaporates from the basins until the salt itself is left. This was stored in the adjacent caves, which were carved out of the coastal rock.

You can combine a trip to the salt flats with a visit to the beautiful Wied il-Ghasri Bay.

How to get there

The salt pans are best reached by car along the coastal road between Marsalforn and Zebbug.

You can park for free anywhere along the road and go for walks among the salt pans.

On the way out of Marsalforn you will pass through a very photogenic stretch of road that practically reaches sea level at one point.

The nearest bus stop to the 310 line is on the outskirts of Marsalforn (about 500 metres from the salt pans).
