Although the name may remind you of the monumental Forum Romanum in Rome, the actual excavation area itself is quite small and will take you around 10 minutes to visit.

The history of the Roman Forum

While the area further east around the Rotunda was the political and religious centre of the city, the Roman Forum (also known as the Roman Agora in Greek), built in the second half of the 3rd century, served as the cultural, official and social centre of Thessaloniki.

The Forum was built on two terraces, which can still be seen today. The complex of official buildings and shops is complemented by the most prominent structure of the theatre, as well as the Roman baths.

The site was not discovered until the 1960s, when a courthouse was to be built on the site. After the discovery, the project was cancelled and the Roman Forum preserved.

Admission and opening hours

The Roman Forum in Thessaloniki can easily be viewed from the surrounding streets, where you can see all the sites. Of course, history and archaeology enthusiasts can also descend inside the excavations, which are open daily except Tuesdays from 8:00-20:00.

The entrance fee is 8 eur and also applies to the nearby Galeri Palace.
