Terra Boa

Fatamorgana in Terra Boa

Thevast wasteland in the north of the island, known as Terra Boa, is said to be the most fertile land in all of Sal. The barren desert with few bushes and grasses is definitely a tourist destination. You'll see a mirage here .

Fata morgana

During tours, tourists stop roughly halfway through this area to admire the distant phenomena known as the fata morgana.

This is the visible image of a body of water in a place where there is no water. It can be seen in deserts, but also in polar images. This optical phenomenon is caused by a temperature inversion in the atmosphere.

We know stories about mirages from the stories of pilgrims who were gasping for water in the middle of deserts, and mirages gave them false hope that they had found a source of water.

You can also observe Salu Monte Grande, the highest mountain in the distance to the north. It is only 406 metres high, but it is the highest point on the island.
