The Bulgarian capital may not make travellers want to visit at first sight. Sofia lacks its original historical centre and the major sights can all be seen within 2 hours.
However, Sofia will captivate travellers with its location right at the foot of over 2,000m high mountains, which can be easily reached by city buses.
Although at first glance it may seem that a few hours in Sofia is plenty of time to explore the city, we would definitely recommend staying here for at least 3 nights. And if you want to walk the entirety of the Vitosha mountain range above the city, stay in Sofia for 4 nights.
