Transfer at Las Vegas Airport

Las Vegas

Las Vegas Airport uses a total of 2 terminals and one satellite building in the middle of the airport, which is accessible from both main terminals.

The two terminals are approximately 0.5 miles apart and can be moved between them by shuttle bus through the airside or by automated train through the transit area (but 1 transfer is required).

Which terminal?

Which Las Vegas Airport terminal will your flight depart from? For a clear breakdown of all airlines and specific flights, visit: harryreidairport.com/Airlines.

If you're traveling with carry-on luggage only and have a mobile or printed boarding pass, it doesn't matter which terminal you go through security at. Especially for flights departing from D-gates, the journey from both terminals is similarly long.

Terminal 1

This terminal is for domestic flights only. Check-in desks are used by all airlines departing from departure gates A, B, C and some airlines departing from D-gates.

Gates C1-C21 can be approached from the main terminal by a free automated train. It runs approximately once every 3 minutes and the journey time is 2 minutes. Alternatively, you can use the approximately 250-metre long pedestrian passage.

The D gates can only be reached from the main terminal by a free automatic train. It runs approximately once every 3 minutes and the journey time is 4 minutes.

Terminal 3

The more modern Terminal 3 serves both domestic and international flights and was created by completely rebuilding the now defunct Terminal 2.

Check-in desks are used by all airlines departing from departure gates E and some airlines departing from gates D.

Gate D can only be reached from the main terminal by a free automated train. It runs approximately once every 3 minutes and the journey time is 4 minutes.

Transfer between flights

Las Vegas Airport is a major domestic transfer point. There are relatively few international flights to Las Vegas, but especially when travelling from Canada, Mexico or London, you may have to change from international to domestic flights or vice versa.

Purely international transfers are rare but not impossible in Las Vegas.

What checks do I go through when I transfer?

What are the exact procedures for each type of transfer?

  • Domestic -> domestic: no check
  • International -> domestic: immigration and security check
  • National -> international: no check
  • International -> International: immigration and security check

Do I have to leave the transit zone when transferring between terminals?

You do not need to leave the transit zone for a domestic transfer or a transfer from a domestic to an international flight purchased within the same booking.

The terminals are interconnected by an automatic train running every 3 minutes free of charge along the route Terminal 3 (E-Gates) <-> D-Gates <-> Terminal 1 (A, B, C-Gates).

The journey between the furthest corners of the airport takes about 30 minutes net.

If you arrive in Las Vegas on an international flight, you will always arrive at Terminal 3. You must exit the transit area, go through immigration, and take the free 20-30 minute shuttle bus between terminals via the outside area.

If you're not changing terminals, just take the exit outside to the 2nd level of Terminal 3 where the check-in desks and security checkpoints are located.

Check in again and go through security to the transit area.

Do I need to collect my luggage?

If you are arriving in Las Vegas from abroad, you must always pick up your baggage and check it in again at the check-in counter.

If you are flying from a destination within the US and have a layover of no more than 8 hours, your baggage will be automatically transferred. It does not matter whether you continue on an international or domestic flight.

Do I need to apply for ESTA?

Every time you transfer from an international flight, you must collect your baggage and exit the transit area.

Therefore, you must have an electronic ESTA to enter the United States (for 21 usd online processing at the official website: esta.cbp.dhs.gov).

How long does the immigration check take?

If you arrive during off-peak hours, you can be in the public section in 20 minutes. Because Las Vegas doesn't have many international flights, it rarely takes more than 1.5 hours to clear immigration.

If you don't make your guaranteed connection due to the length of immigration, the airline will arrange your next flight free of charge. However, accommodation at the airline's expense is not provided in these cases.

Do I go through passport control on departure?

No. There is no longer an immigration check on departure from the USA.
