Transfer at Hamburg Airport

Hamburg

Although Hamburg Airport has two terminals, it is actually one rather large building divided into three parts: Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and the "Airport Plaza" which connects the two terminals.

The building is modern and very clearly signposted.

The ground floor of the terminals is used for arrivals and the 1st floor is used for check-in desks and security control.

The individual terminals are divided by airline and both simultaneously handle flights to Schengen and non-Schengen countries.

Terminals by airline

If you are departing with the following airlines, head straight to the appropriate terminal for check-in. Even if you make a mistake, you can reach the adjacent terminal under one roof within 10 minutes.

  • Terminal 1 - Air Cairo, Air France, Air Serbia, Condor, Corendon, Danish Air Transport, EasyJet, Emirates, Eurowings, Finnair, Freebird Airlines, Icelandair, Iran Air, ITA Airways, KLM, Mavi Gök, Norwegian, Nouvelair, Play, Sky Alps, SunExpress, Tailwind Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Volotea, Wideroe
  • Terminal 2 - Aegean Airlines, Aer Lingus, Air Baltic, Austrian, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Iberia, LOT, Lufthansa, Luxair, Marabu, Pegasus Airlines, Rhein-Neckar Air, Ryanair, SAS, Swiss, TAP, Tunisair, Vueling, Wizz Air

Transfer between flights

Transferring in Hamburg is very easy and extremely straightforward.

While in the public area (landside) the building is divided between two terminals, in the transit area (airside) the two parts are connected in one terminal.

So if you are connecting at Hamburg Airport, it doesn't matter whether your flight departs from Terminal 1 or Terminal 2: there is effectively only one transit zone and you can move freely between the terminals within a 10-minute walk.

Schengen <-> Schengen

Transferring between two flights from/to the Schengen area is very easy. You get off the plane directly into the departure gate area.

If you are travelling with hand luggage only, or if you are connecting on one booking and do not need to worry about checked luggage, just look for the departure gate after you enter the building. There is no check-in process.

The net transfer time between two planes is 5 to 10 minutes.

Non-Schengen <-> Schengen

If you arrive from a non-Schengen country (typically Dubai or Turkey), you must always go through passport control and then security.

If you are transferring from a Schengen country to a non-Schengen flight, you only have to go through passport control.

However, you do not have to leave the transit zone and you will pass through a special corridor for transferring passengers.

The net transfer time between the two planes is 30 to 75 minutes, depending on the queue at passport control.
