Skansen Kronan

Skansen Kronan, Gothenburg

The old and well-preserved fortification Skansen Kronan can be found on Risåsberget hill, which towers over the Haga district. Climb the three hundred steps and you'll get a unique view of the whole city of Gothenburg, especially at sunset.

The fortress was built in 1698 to protect the city from Danish attacks. However, there was no attack and the fortress later became a prison, then an emergency residence and later a military museum. Today, the inner part is not open to the public and is used for weddings, conferences and other events.

There used to be 23 cannons around the fort and some of them are still there today. Besides these, there are plenty of benches to rest on after a strenuous climb and enjoy the view.

You can get here easily from the Haga district. Look up, find the hill and walk in that direction.
