Poseidon statue in Gothenburg

The statue of Poseidon is one of the most famous and important monuments in the whole of Gothenburg. It is located at the end of Avenyn Boulevard in Götaplatsen Square, which is slightly elevated above the rest of the city. The shared still life is then the subject of many photographs and postcards of Gothenburg.

The statue of Poseidon, the god of the sea, was sculpted by Carl Millese and first unveiled in 1931.

Götaplatsen Square

The statue is placed in a fountain of water in Götaplatsen Square, where it shares space with three important buildings in Gothenburg, Sweden - the Gothenburg Art Museum, the Municipal Theatre and the Concert Hall, which houses the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. Just across the road is another modern building, which is the Municipal Library.

The entire square was built in 1923 as a venue for the Gothenburg World's Fair.

The Municipal Theatre

The City Theatre was designed by Karl Bergsten and originally opened its doors for the first time in 1934. The building is famous for its elegant 1930s architecture, which you'll notice especially in the famous staircase. The theatre retained its elegant touch even after 2002, when it underwent a complete renovation.
